1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)
1½ lbs ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp oregano
½ tsp paprika
1½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
Optional: ¼ tsp red pepper flakes, cooked rice
Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Brown beef with onion and garlic. Drain fat.
Stir in tomato sauce and seasonings. Simmer 5 minutes.
Steam or sauté cabbage until just tender. Drain well.
Layer half the cabbage in baking dish, then half the beef mixture, and a sprinkle of cheese. Repeat layers.
Top with remaining cheese. Cover and bake 20 minutes. Uncover and bake 5–10 more minutes.
Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
Make ahead and refrigerate before baking. Swap ground turkey for a lighter version.
